Here is the 1954 Willys I have been working on for several years. I bought it at the Carlo Cerelli estate auction about 5 or 6 years ago. It was something Carlo was working on at one time but it got put back in the corner of his shop in 1984 and set there until the auction in about 2013. He had redone the seats, for some unknown reason sprayed red oxide primer over it and then parked it.
I sandblasted the wheels, painted them tan with Valspar paint, put a new set of Mastercraft 215/85/16 tires on it, did a bunch of wiring on the lights and got them all to work.
I got it running, rebuilt the brakes, etc., drove it about 10 miles and it locked up. I bought a rebuilt engine that had been done in New York, had about $3000 worth of receipts with it for the work, shipped it to Helena and finally got it installed in October of 2018. Since it was obvious I was never going to have time to do it I had the engine switch done by a young mechanic near Judith Gap, Nathan Baird. He switched the engines, put in a rebuilt Herm transmission, new clutch and throwout bearing, new U joints and did all sort of other things like new battery cables, all the hoses, installed a tank heater, etc so it would be good to go. We put a new gas tank and fuel pump as well as a new Stromberg carburetor on it. Rebuilt the generator and (I think) the starter. I got it back from him in November. I have been driving it since then but in all honesty where I want to drive it, back and forth from my house in Helena and my ranch near Winston -- about 21 miles -- it is just too slow to be safe. It is very happy at about 45-50 while the traffic on that stretch of road is running 75-80 all the time.
We did not replace or remove and rebuild the transfer case. It works in all the gears but a couple times popped out of low range when we were first checking it out. I dunno. It has front free wheeling or engaged hubs that work.
So I decided to sell it. You will not find a better pickup for this kind of money. It runs great, drives decent although it needs some work on the front end -- probably the steering sector -- to take the slack out and make it a little more responsive to the wheel. I have the headlight bezels and turn signal bezels. The turn signals are not hooked up currently. I think most of the primer can be wiped off the original red paint with some lacquer thinner. I did a couple little spots and it didn't take much to get to the red paint underneath.
The speedometer worked up until about 25 miles ago. I think the cable broke. The heat gauge does not work. On the other hand, the brake lights do.
I have the "Four Wheel Drive" pieces that go on the sides of the hood. I also have a correct Carter YF carburetor for it and some other miscellaneous parts that go with it.
There is a little rust in the floorboards, there are some pretty crude patches pop riveted in over the bad spot.
This was a Yellowstone Park Fire Suppression Support truck. There is still a plaque on the dash and some decals on the windows. There is also a carrier on the driver's side that would have held a portable fire extinguisher.
$8000 Cash or Cashiers check. I will help load it or if you have time and patience you can drive it home. I have a clear Montana title in my name and it is currently licensed.
January 2019 -- I recently bought a 52 pickup with a Chevy 235 engine, hasn't run for about 15 years, looks good and should run and drive. Good body, very nice box. Big heavy bumper on the back that kept the box and fenders nice.
It looks pretty good, I've been wanting to go get it, it's only a few miles from my house, it snowed a few days after I bought it and I haven't been able to get in where it is since. Keep checking back.
Clear Montana title, I will probably just sell it as it is as I don't have time to try to get it running. They drove it in to where it is parked. I'll be looking for around $3500 for it as it sits. Give me a call and be first on the list. 406-949-3448
Here is a nice 56 for sale. SOLD!! Went to a good home near Lewistown
.
This is the 49 that is on the Kaiser Willys site for sale. $6500 or best reasonable offer.
HERE IS A VERY VERY NICE LITTLE 1949 PICKUP. IT is not totally original since it has a later F head engine. That is very typical of these early pickups that came with the little GoDevil 4 cylinder flathead. They were pretty short lived and the F head had more power and could take more speed without blowing apart. It also has 15 inch wheels and would look better with 16's which originally came with it. They are not so hard to find but I didn't have a set and wanted to get tires on this.
You will probably notice that the left rear wheel is not setting straight. The clamp on the spring was missing when we took these photos.
I have a clear, current (2017) Montana title in my name with numbers that match the vin plate. It came with the original Montana title from 1949 as well as a later title. I had to turn that in to transfer it to my name. It has current Montana license plates on it.
Take a look at this pickup and you will be hard pressed to find one this original, rust free and complete. This is worth every dime of $7500 but I will listen to offers. I would keep it myself but I have a 54 I've already put all sorts of time and money into and I just have too many projects, not enough money and time. (Plus I'm old) I need it gone.
Take a look at the photos, give me a call and come take a look. 406-949-3448 stanhowemt@aol.com
Is this not the best bullet hole you have ever seen. I could make up a lot of stories about it!! I'm pretty sure it was some kids shooting in the salvage yard I bought this out of but between this hole and the one in the right side vent window you could write a book about a bank robbery or whatever you wanted.
I love it.
It would be a shame to paint this. If it doesn't sell I am planning on getting it running and driving and just keep it.
